Tobacco Cessation Toolkit
Dentists see patients more frequently than most healthcare providers. You are uniquely positioned to help patients quit tobacco — using the proven 5A's framework.
The 5A's Framework
A brief, evidence-based intervention that takes less than 10 minutes total. Each step builds on the previous one.
Systematically ask about tobacco use status at every dental visit. Record the type (smoked, smokeless, e-cigarette), frequency, and duration. Update this at every appointment — use it as a vital sign.
💬 Chair-Side Script
"As part of our routine health check, I ask all patients about tobacco use. Do you currently use any tobacco products — cigarettes, beedi, gutka, pan masala, or e-cigarettes?"
💡 Practical Tips
- •Ask in a non-judgmental, matter-of-fact way
- •Include all forms: cigarettes, beedi, hookah, gutka, pan masala, khaini, e-cigarettes
- •Record in patient chart as a vital sign — update every visit
- •For 'never users' — congratulate and reinforce
- •For 'former users' — ask when they quit and congratulate

Oral Cancer
IrreversibleTobacco users have 5-10x increased risk. Smokeless tobacco: cancer of cheek, gum, and lip
Bone Loss
IrreversibleAccelerated alveolar bone resorption — affects implant success and denture fit

Halitosis
ReversiblePersistent bad breath from tar, nicotine, and altered oral microbiome
Delayed Healing
ReversiblePoor wound healing after extractions, surgery — higher risk of dry socket
